Arthur J. Mannion, Sr. Memorial ScholarshipEstablished in 1983 by family members and the Knights of Columbus, the Arthur J. Mannion, Sr. Sr. Memorial Scholarship, totaling $4,000 ($1,000 awarded to four college students each year), memorializes an individual renowned for his insight, genuiness, and selfless service to his fellow man. Known to all for his "down-to-earth" common sense, and widely respected for his contributions to the community and his Church, Arthur Mannion joined the Knights of Columbus in the late 1920s. Members immediately took notice and he rose rapidly through the officer ranks. He served as Deputy Grand Knight, Grand Knight and trustee in the 1930's. He also served as official delegate to several state conventions and one national convention. He helped organize the October 1945 "Mortgage Burning Celebration" which gave clear title to the Home of the Council on Greenwood Avenue. Throughout the years, Mr. Mannion served on many Knights of Columbus committees and in 1971 was awarded Honorary Life Membership in the Order. Brother Mannion's service to the community was similarly impressive. He served on many town boards, was a founding member of the Saint Mary's Home and School Association, and also assumed the Police Commissioner post. He rejoiced in his faith and his family. Arthur Mannion exemplified the true Brotherhood of Columbianism. Bethel and the Knights of Columbus are better today due to him. As the councils history fondly records, " people listened because Art Mannions opinion meant something". This scholarship proudly bears his name.
